March is here again and we love this time of year as the middle of the month calls for a celebration and that celebration is St Patrick’s Day! In our last blog we talked about an event on the Christian calendar that is now celebrated by all and St Patrick’s Day is the same so we’re going to let you in on a bit about the celebration, most importantly the food links and let you know how you can celebrate with Chef’s Compliments this year.

How St Patricks Day became such a big celebration

It probably comes as no surprise to you that St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland which is why the celebrations of the 17th March every year are heavily Irish influenced. There are legends about St Patrick such as that he drove snakes out of Ireland and this is part of why he is so celebrated and the day is marked.

Like what we now know as Pancake Day, St Patricks day was initially a church celebration and it’s recognition was mostly in Ireland. Thanks to Irish emigrants, the feast has become what we know it as today, a secular celebration that everyone gets involved in. Irish abroad used the day to remind them of their beloved home and celebrate all things Irish spreading the day’s popularity outside the borders of Ireland!

Food to mark the occasion

Of course no celebration is complete without food and St Patrick’s Day is no exception. You may have already guessed it but as a holiday that celebrates all things Irish of course the food used to often mark the occasion has an Irish connection.

Irish American staples of corn beef and cabbage are now associated with the 17th March and the two can be combined in a corned-beef and cabbage hash. Corned-beef hash is enjoyed as a breakfast by Irish Americans so could be a great way to start the festivities!

No Irish dish would be complete without soda bread so it’s the perfect time of year to get some in or why not have a go of making it yourself?

When you think of St Patricks Day food may not be the first thing that comes to your mind but we’re sure drink is and a certain dark one with a cloudy white top, we are of course talking about Guinness! It’s estimated that 13 million pints of Guinness are enjoyed in 150 countries around the world on St Patricks Day and if you’ve been part of a St Patrick’s Day celebration we’re sure that comes as no surprise! The black stuff is not only great to drink but can be used in a variety of recipes from sweet cakes to beef stew and St Patrick’s Day brings a great excuse to experiment in the kitchen with it.
