07 Mar Seasonal Spring
For many of us it felt like spring had already sprung last week with the great weather we had and although it’s not quite here yet we’re getting you ready for it by sharing the produce that will be coming into season that you can enjoy for lunch or incorporate into dishes for a dinner party.
Did you know that the last day of March will be the beginning of British Summertime? On the 31st March the clocks will be changing so we’ll be losing an hour of sleep but we will have the promise of sunnier weather and new seasonal produce to look forward to!
So what fruit and veg will be coming into season in the UK in the months of April and May in the lead up to the summer months?
April offers plenty of green veg including cabbage, chicory, kale, rocket, sorrel, spinach, spring onions, watercress and of course it’s the season for spring greens! All these green goodies are great for making different salads which will be a welcome change when the weather starts to get a bit warmer and you can add some colour to your salad with other in season veg including beetroot and radishes. New potatoes are also in season and are a great addition to bulk up a salad. If you’re a lover of roast dinners you can savour the taste of in season roasted carrots and parsnips before things warm up outside! If you’re interested in foraging it’s also worth knowing that morel mushrooms will be in season at this time too.
Hopefully, by May we will be starting to feel the summer heat and you will also be able to feel the heat in your kitchen as chillies come into season. Aubergine, peppers and marrow will also be in season all of which can be great in curries or pasta dishes. Maybe the most exciting bit of produce May has to offer is strawberries! So on the longer, lighter evenings you can again enjoy a bowl of strawberries and cream!
We hope your taste buds are tingling with what’s in store in the season to come and if we’ve inspired you to east more seasonal produce why not arrange a spring seasonal produce lesson with us? A bespoke cooking lesson can be created for you based on the produce coming into season that you’d be interested in making dishes with and then one of our chefs will be able to bring all the ingredients to your home and teach you how to make the dishes.
