18 Feb New Toppings To Try This Pancake Day
Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as pancake day, falls on 25th February 2020 and is always the Tuesday immediately preceding Ash Wednesday and 47 days before Easter Sunday. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to use fats and eggs before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way to use up all the ingredients. The ingredients used to make pancake symbolise four points of significance at this time of year; eggs (creation), flour (staff of life), salt (wholesomeness) and milk (purity).
So, to mark the first pancake day of the new decade, why not try some new pancake day toppings?
Combine Hot & Cold
If you have had warm crumble and ice cream, then you will know how well the contrast between the two temperatures work and you will love putting ice cream on your pancakes straight out of the pan. Choose your favourite flavour and add different fruit or sprinkles to your dessert for the perfect finishing touch!
Nutella & Banana
Nutella and banana are a delicious sweet treat to have in the morning on Shrove Tuesday, but to for a delicious twist, add roasted hazelnuts, cream, amaretto and milk chocolate combined and pour the sauce over warm pancakes. You can even swap the Amaretto for other creamy and complementary liquors, such as Baileys.
Lemon & Sugar
Nothing beats the traditional and simple combination of lemon and sugar! You cannot go wrong with this classic mixture when it comes to pancake day toppings. The sweetness of the sugar complements the tangy flavour of the lemon exceptionally well, as neither overpowers the other.
Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese
If you would prefer savoury pancake day toppings, you can’t beat smoke salmon and cream cheese! Alternatively, for Sunday brunch swap cream cheese for horseradish sauce. You could even go all out and add a soft-poached egg and slices of avocado!
Maple Syrup & Bacon
Enjoy the all-American favourite; maple syrup and bacon pancake day toppings! The sweet and salty combo works seamlessly together and has proven to be a real crowd pleaser! Like all the other toppings, maple syrup and bacon are easy to prepare and delicious to eat; they’re very moreish!
Jam & Cream
Transform your traditional afternoon tea and put jam and clotted cream on your pancakes instead of your scones. This afternoon-inspired treat can be made in a number of different ways; add the jam and cream into different layers or put jam in between all the pancakes in the stack and add clotted cream to the top.
Chocolate-Filled
Push your pancake-making skills and create chocolate-filled pancakes. If you have a real sweet tooth then drip maple syrup, chopped hazelnuts and caramelised banana over the top; you won’t regret it!
Rainbow Pancakes
Add some colour to your pancake day with rainbow-coloured pancakes. You can choose the colours you want and simply use food colouring to make the pancakes different colours. Add fresh blueberries, raspberries, cream and sweet maple syrup to finish the dessert off!
Hopefully, these new pancake day toppings will give you some inspiration and ideas to make Shrove Tuesday a little different this year! Happy pancake day!
