25 Jul In Season, In Summer
The heat has turned up in the UK with the current heat wave and naturally with the change in weather comes a whole host of new fresh produce that’s in season for you to experiment with in your kitchen!
This week we’ll be talking about some of the great fruit and veg that’s in season right now, and the summer dishes you can create with it. At Chef’s Compliments, we always use seasonal ingredients whether we are helping you host a dinner party or providing private catering services.
So what’s in season, in summer?
A whole host of veg is now in season and at its best, ready for you to enjoy. Two great summer vegetables that have come into season are aubergines and new potatoes. Of all the new in season produce, we have highlighted these two pieces of veg as they are great additions to your summer salads which is just what you need in this heat and they will make them a bit more filling. Both aubergines and new potatoes can be cooked and then cooled to be added to a refreshing salad, whether it’s a simple potato salad or you make a Moroccan inspired zaalouk from aubergines, both are perfect with some crunchy green leaves!
If you’re looking for some green leaves to add to your salad, rocket and sorrel are both in season now and there’s also a host of colourful veg that can be added to liven up your salad. Beetroot, carrot and radish are all at their best now and therefore essential additions to your salad shopping list.
Now is also a great time to enjoy a sweet salad too as there are so many different types of fruit that are in season in the UK right now. From blackberries to strawberries, now is the time to make the most of the fruits that grown in the UK with a fruit salad.
It’s definitely British berries time to shine at the moment! Along with blackberries and strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, loganberries and raspberries are all at their best right now. These berries are ideal as healthy summer snacks and to make them extra refreshing why not freeze them and have a cold crunchy berry alternative to an ice cream or ice lolly?
Another way to cool off and enjoy this season’s berries is by using them to make smoothies. Along with the British berries we’ve already mentioned, there’s also some other British fruits that you can enjoy alongside them in a smoothie such as blackcurrants, cherries and redcurrants. We recommend blending the best of British fruits this summer as a smoothie rather than as a juice because that way you get the full benefit of all the fabulous fibre in these fruits!
We hope we’ve inspired you with some new ways to enjoy the best of British produce this summer with some savoury and sweet options.
