Eat Less Sugar And Salt
You probably don’t realise it, but a lot of the products you consume consist of a lot of sugar or salt. This high consumption of these products can put you at risk of high blood pressure and increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. Although we get most of our sodium intake through salt, it’s important that you cut down the amount you consume. When preparing food, remove salt and when buying packaged food, read the labels to identify how much salt it contains.
Eating excessive amounts of sugar can increase the risk of tooth decay, as well as unhealthy weight gain. Limit the consumption of sugary beverages and snacks and check the labels to make sure you’re not going over the recommended daily allowance.
Have Healthy Food Readily Available
If you get hungry, you’re likely to grab the first thing you see in the cupboards or that is readily available to you to eat, which tends to be unhealthy. Therefore, put healthy food in these visible places, both at home and in your workplace, to encourage yourself to eat a healthy snack instead. If the fruit or healthy snack is at reach or the first thing you come across when you’re hungry, you’re more likely to eat that, as opposed to searching for something high in salt, fat or sugar.
Prepare Your Meals
Meal planning is a really beneficial way to eat healthy. By meal prepping, you can eat smaller portions and know that what you are eating is fresh and contains healthy foods. By making dishes from scratch and putting them in individual containers, you can track your calorie intake and not be persuaded to choose something unhealthy from the shop instead. This is also a great way to save money, as you can prepare the meals at the beginning of the week and save them in the freezer for meals later in the week.
Eat On Smaller Plates
A lot of us don’t like to leave any food on our plate and when we eat on a large plate, our brain can trick us into thinking that we haven’t eaten enough. However, by putting your meal on a smaller plate, not only will you be eating less, but you will feel full quicker and not overeat.
Consume More Fish
Eating fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel at least twice a week can improve our heart and brain health. These superfoods are packed full of omega-3 fatty acids and may even reduce risk of disease such as dementia, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
As you can see, there are a number of ways that you can begin to implement healthy eating into your diet this new year. For more information for healthy eating or for a home cooking lesson to learn how to create nutritious dishes, get in touch with us, today.
