Have Yourself a Seasonal Little Christmas

There are many advantages to eating seasonal food and these include;

  • Price- In season food tends to be cheaper as there is an abundance of it available.
  • Taste- Eating in season produce often tastes better as you’re eating it when it’s at its peak and for fruit and veg the time of year it’s supposed to grow and be at its best.
  • Nutrition- In season produce is full of nutritional benefits as they are packed with the vitamins that we need at the specific times of year they’re in season.

So that’s why it would be great to add some seasonal additions to your plate this Christmas but what is on offer this season? Here are five of our favourite’s pieces of produce in season in December.

Brussels sprouts- You may be pleased or not pleased to hear this little green balls are in season as they split opinion. Whether you love or hate the Brussels sprouts you can’t deny they are a Christmas staple and therefore a great addition to your plate this December.

Turkey- It probably comes as no surprise that Turkey is also in season at this time of year as you have started to notice the freezers in the supermarket fill up with them! Christmas would not be complete without one of these birds at the centre of the table.

Goose- Another bird in season at this time of year is goose. Probably not as popular as the turkey is today but the goose is also a traditional bird roasted on the big day, not to mention that its fat is great for roasting roast potatoes. Why not make the most of this bird being in season by swapping your turkey for it this Christmas.

Turnips- Back to veg and turnips along Brussels sprouts are another piece of veg in season in December and a great addition to your Christmas roast. Roasted turnips are a must so if you haven’t before, make sure you give them a try this year.

Pomegranate- This piece of fruit is a Christmas symbol and it’s no wonder why as now is the best time of year to enjoy it! Not only does it look beautiful and decorative it is the perfect light treat after your big Christmas dinner!
