25 Best Fall Fruits and Vegetables - What to Know About Autumn Produce

The seasons are about to change and we know some of you may be sad to be approaching the colder months but Chef’s Compliments are sharing with you a reason to celebrate the season change and that’s all the awesome food that will be coming into season this autumn.

If you are a regular reader of our blog then you are probably familiar with the idea of seasonal eating but if you’re new here don’t worry, we’re breaking down all you need to know plus which produce you have to look forward to this coming season.

Being seasonally conscious of the food you’re eating is recognising that the growth of some fruit and vegetables is dependent on season specific weather. We know what you’re thinking, I can find a host of fruit and vegetables on supermarket shelves year round so how can they be dependent on the season’s weather? Science’s role in agriculture has meant that fruit and veg does not have to depend on seasonal weather and although fruit and veg used to only be available during the times of year it was in season, this is no longer the case. Now we’re sure you’re thinking, well why eat it in it’s season when I can get it all year round? Well, take strawberries for example, when grown in their natural season of summer, they have more nutrition and flavour than those grown in winter.

So now you’ve got the gist of what seasonal food is, here are a few more reasons why it’s so great!

1. Variety is the spice of life!- Seasonal eating encourages a diverse diet as you look to discover the new produce of each season that comes. If you compare this to just shopping without the consciousness, you’re more likely to buy the same things that are available year round. Not only does changing things up make dinner time more exciting but it also helps you to get vital vitamins and minerals you may have missed out on.

2. Environmental impact- As we mentioned, to make certain produce available year round there needs to be scientific intervention. Mimicking seasonal weather in order to produce crops can actually be damaging for the environment as it uses non renewable energy and water resources.

If you didn’t know much about seasonal eating before you started this blog we’re sure you’re intrigued now and to help you learn more/get started on your seasonal eating journey, we’re sharing with you the produce coming into season now.
