Another week, another seasonal ingredient and this week it’s the apple we’re shining light on which are at their best at the moment. This versatile fruit is great in desserts as well as complimenting savoury dishes for you to serve at your dinner party, so don’t miss out on it this season!

It may be true what they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ The apple has many health benefits, one of them being that it is rich in antioxidants which can help reduce the risk of developing cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

You may have already guessed it, like the other produce of this season that we have mentioned, the apple is also a great source of vitamin C. Stocking up on your vitamin C now is a great tip so you don’t get hit by an unwanted cold over the party season or worse still a cold sore!

We know we have been talking about the health benefits of this fruit but this week we are going to share with you a bit more of a naughty way to enjoy it! After all it is the party season coming up! Now is the perfect time to learn our apple cocktail recipe below.

Winter Time Sangria

Ingredients

5 cinnamon sticks
4 apples, chopped (4 medium or 5 small)
2 oranges, sliced into thin rounds
2 bottles red wine
830ml cups apple cider
240ml brandy
120ml cup orange juice
60ml cup superfine sugar
juice from 1 lemon
470ml club soda or ginger ale

Extras

cinnamon-sugar, for rimming glasses
tall cinnamon sticks for garnish

Method

  1. In a large pitcher or bowl, combine the wine, apple cider, brandy,
  2. orange juice, lemon juice and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Mix in the chopped apples, orange slices, and cinnamon sticks.
  3. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours, or up to overnight. Add club soda (or ginger ale) just before serving.

 

For added flair, rim glasses with cinnamon sugar and garnish with a tall cinnamon stick.
